Dumka police have intensified their crackdown on the illegal narcotics trade, arresting five youths and seizing nearly 19 grams of semi-refined heroin, locally known as brown sugar, in two separate operations conducted within 48 hours.
In the latest raid on Tuesday morning, a team led by Jarmundi Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Naval Kishore Singh apprehended two youths from an under-construction house at Kurmahat under Hansdiha police station. Acting on a specific tip-off about the sale and consumption of banned substances, the police surrounded the building behind a defunct hotel along Dhawatand road.
As the police arrived, five youths attempted to flee. After a brief chase, officers arrested Ankit Kumar Mishra and Aniruddh Gorai, both 20 and residents of Rasikpur in Dumka town, while three others escaped. A search led to the recovery of 5.02 grams of brown sugar from Mishra and 4.04 grams from Gorai, taking the total seizure to 9.06 grams. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and both accused have been sent to judicial custody.
The arrests follow another successful raid by the same police team at the +2 High School Stadium in Hansdiha, where three 19-year-old alleged peddlers—Sahadat Sheikh, Mohammad Basir and Aryan Sheikh of Dudhani—were arrested with 9.72 grams of brown sugar.
Police said the consecutive arrests indicate an expanding drug network linking Dumka town with rural pockets. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the main suppliers behind the illicit trade.
