The Labour Department on Saturday extended financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the family of a migrant worker from Deoghar who lost his life in a workplace accident in Tamil Nadu.
Labour Superintendent Shailendra Kumar Sah handed over the cheque to Jitani Devi, wife of late Birju Manjhi, under the Mukhyamantri Jharkhand Pravasi Shramik Durghatna Kosh (Chief Minister Jharkhand Migrant Workers Accident Fund).
Birju Manjhi, a resident of Devgharbad village under Pathardda Panchayat in Sarath block of Deoghar district, had migrated to Chennai for work. He died on May 31, 2026, after a roof collapsed on him at his workplace.
Under the state government’s accident relief scheme, the dependent of a deceased registered migrant worker is entitled to financial assistance of Rs 50,000.
While handing over the cheque, Labour Superintendent Sah urged migrant workers to register themselves on the Shramadhan Portal and keep the district administration or Labour Department informed before leaving the state for employment. He said such registration enables the government to provide timely assistance and ensure workers receive benefits under various welfare schemes in case of emergencies.
He also reminded contractors that they are required to obtain the necessary licences before taking workers outside Jharkhand for employment. According to the department, registration on the Shramadhan Portal allows migrant workers to access multiple state welfare benefits while working outside the state.
