A major food safety inspection has raised concerns over the quality of food being served at several well-known hotels, restaurants and food outlets in Jamshedpur, with laboratory tests revealing that samples collected from 12 prominent establishments either failed prescribed quality standards or were found to be adulterated.
The findings emerged from inspections carried out by the East Singhbhum Food Safety Department over the past few months. Based on the laboratory reports, the department has issued show-cause notices to all the establishments concerned and initiated legal proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
According to officials, the failed samples included commonly consumed food items such as pizza cheese spread, paneer, chilli sauce, chilli powder, black pepper powder, roasted gram, laddus, basmati rice and Turkish apricot. While several samples were declared substandard for not meeting prescribed quality parameters, others were found to be adulterated, raising concerns over consumer health and food hygiene.
Among the establishments where samples failed were Domino’s Pizza in Sakchi, Hotel Radisson Blu in Bistupur, Reliance Retail at PM Mall, Time Out at PM Mall, G-Town Club, Ramesh Chanachur, Soni Hospitality Services, Khana Drama, Maa Durga Misthan Bhandar in Mango, Mostafi Chanachur in Parsudih, New Maharani Confectionery in Burmamines and Sandhu Billu Dhaba in Ghatshila.
Food Inspector Sanjay Kumar said the department has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards food adulteration and substandard food products. He said food samples are being collected regularly from hotels, restaurants, sweet shops and retail outlets across the district for laboratory analysis. He also confirmed that a notice has been served to SIL Food India Private Limited, Pune, in connection with one of the failed samples.
“The health of consumers cannot be compromised. Strict legal action will be taken wherever food safety standards are violated,” Kumar said.
Officials said all the establishments have been directed to submit their explanations within the stipulated period. After reviewing their responses and completing statutory procedures, the department will proceed with prosecution against those found guilty. Depending on the nature of the violations, offenders could face penalties, prosecution and other legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The Food Safety Department has also appealed to residents to remain alert while purchasing or consuming food from hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. Consumers have been urged to immediately report any suspected cases of food adulteration or poor-quality food so that prompt inspections and sampling can be carried out. Officials said regular surveillance and inspections will continue to ensure that food sold across the district is safe, hygienic and compliant with prescribed standards.
