Panic gripped Dhanbad on Wednesday after the city’s Head Post Office received an email threatening to blow up the building and the adjoining Passport Office using a cyanide gas bomb.
According to officials, the threatening email was received between 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., claiming that explosions would take place at around 1:00 p.m.
Following the threat, postal authorities immediately evacuated the premises as a precaution. Employees and members of the public were safely moved out, while police, district administration officials and a dog squad rushed to the spot and launched a comprehensive search operation.
No suspicious object or explosive was found during the preliminary search. However, security agencies treated the threat seriously and continued to inspect the premises.
Postmaster Rajiv Kumar said the email claimed the attack would be carried out in retaliation for an alleged insult to an individual. He said the administration was informed immediately, following which the building was evacuated and security checks were initiated.
Police have begun an investigation to trace the sender by examining the email’s IP address and other digital evidence.
This is not the first such incident in Dhanbad. Earlier, the Dhanbad court premises had also received a bomb threat via email, which was later found to be a hoax after investigation.
