Jharkhand’s Film Industry Holds Global Potential: Aseem Sinha
Ranchi, August 22 – Renowned film editor and filmmaker Aseem Sinha has said that Jharkhand has immense potential to carve out a global identity in cinema, provided a positive environment for filmmaking is nurtured from cities to villages.
Speaking at the “Meet the Mentor” programme organized by the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation Limited at the Information Building auditorium, Sinha emphasized that beyond financial support, the state needs strong cinema infrastructure and promotion of film culture in rural areas. He called for seed funding arrangements and robust systems for film and script evaluation, supported by mentoring.
Highlighting the importance of regional talent, Sinha said prioritizing local languages, art, and creativity could help Jharkhand’s films gain recognition on the global stage. Sharing his personal journey, he noted that learning never ends, and spoke about his experiences working with celebrated filmmakers including Shyam Benegal, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Kalpana Lajmi, Ketan Mehta, and Kundan Shah.
Currently serving as the Chairperson of the Jury for the 72nd National Film Awards in the non-feature film category, Sinha also revealed that his long-standing wish for a film institute in Jharkhand is finally taking shape.
On the occasion, Deputy Director Syed Rashid Akhtar felicitated him with a shawl and memento. Joint Director Anand highlighted Sinha’s contribution of editing over 100 films in a career spanning three decades, describing him as an inspiration for Jharkhand’s emerging film industry.
Sinha, who studied in Ranchi before moving to Mumbai, reiterated that the establishment of a film institute in Jharkhand would be a milestone for nurturing future talent. The event was attended by Assistant Director Abhay Kumar, Jeb Akhtar, Anuj Kumar, Mahesh Majhi, and several other dignitaries from the film fraternity.
