A Beacon of Hope: Yogoda Satsanga Hospital’s Gift of Sight
By Krishna Bihari Mishra
Ranchi:- For thousands of patients across Jharkhand, Bihar, Bengal, and Odisha, the Yogoda Satsanga Hospital has become nothing short of a blessing. Known especially for its charitable eye-care services, the hospital has earned a reputation where faith, compassion, and modern medicine converge. Beneficiaries often say that in the hands of Dr. G.S. Mangat, “there is magic.”
Rooted in Service
The hospital traces its origins to the Yogoda Satsanga Math, founded in Ranchi on March 22, 1917, by Paramahansa Yogananda. From its inception, the Math sowed the seeds of spirituality and service, which have since grown into a vast banyan tree of compassion. Today, people of every religion, caste, and community find solace and healing under its shade.
Healing Without Barriers
The hospital’s service ethos is most visible in its eye-care unit. Remarkably, nearly 80 percent of patients who undergo eye surgery here belong to the Muslim community. They proudly recount that their sight was restored at Yogoda, free of cost, under the care of Dr. Mangat. Each year, approximately 2,000 eye operations are performed — without charging a single rupee.
Santosh Kumar Kesari recalls how his aunt Meera Devi from Khunti underwent surgery here after being treated for high blood pressure. “She regained her vision completely. Our family still speaks of Yogoda with gratitude,” he says.
Others echo similar sentiments. Maya, a resident of Ranchi Railway Colony, notes that her mother’s operation years ago was successful, and today the hospital employs the latest technology. “Here you receive two blessings,” she adds. “Guruji’s spiritual grace and the certainty of healing.”
A Doctor’s Calling
Dr. G.S. Mangat’s journey is itself remarkable. He arrived at the Math intending to become a monk, but was guided to serve as a physician instead. Since 2004, he has dedicated himself to Yogoda’s patients. “Service as a doctor is the highest form of seva,” he recalls being told. Inspired deeply by Yogananda’s Whispers from Eternity, Dr. Mangat believes that listening to patients with empathy often alleviates their suffering even before treatment begins.
His popularity is such that patients and families brighten upon seeing him, convinced their ailments will vanish. “The joy on their faces when they regain sight is beyond words,” he says, attributing all credit to his Guru.
Beyond Eye Care
Though best known for ophthalmology, the hospital also offers free treatment in ENT, gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics, and even homeopathy and Ayurveda. Long queues form outside the OPD every Monday, Friday, and Saturday, while surgeries are scheduled midweek. For many, the hospital is a rare example of medical care that is both modern and deeply humane.
A Living Legacy
In a city where government hospitals are often maligned and private clinics demand hefty fees, Yogoda Satsanga Hospital stands apart. It is not merely a medical institution but a sanctuary of hope. As senior journalist Parvez Quraishi recalls, his mother’s failing eyesight was restored here with nothing more than prescribed eye drops — no surgery, no expense. “She insisted on Yogoda, and she was right,” he says.
For the poor and middle-class families of Ranchi and beyond, Yogoda is more than a hospital. It is a living embodiment of Paramahansa Yogananda’s vision: service without discrimination, healing with compassion, and the assurance that no one leaves Guruji’s ashram in despair.
