The removal of actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s film Satluj, based on the life of Punjab human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, from an OTT platform has triggered strong reactions from Sikh organisations, with the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) condemning the decision as an attack on freedom of expression.
The controversy began after the film, which was released on the OTT platform under a new title following a long wait, was taken down within two days of its release. The move has sparked outrage among members of the Sikh community and others who believe the film highlights an important chapter in India’s human rights history.
Expressing support for the film, AISSF national chief Satnam Singh Gambhir criticised the decision to remove it from the streaming platform. He alleged that taking down the film amounted to suppressing truth and collective memory.
“Just as Jaswant Singh Khalra was silenced, the film Satluj has met the same fate,” Gambhir said while strongly condemning the platform’s decision.
He further urged that works depicting historical events and human rights issues should be allowed to reach audiences without unnecessary restrictions, adding that freedom of expression must be respected in a democratic society.
The removal of the film has since become a subject of widespread discussion among Sikh organisations and on social media, with many demanding that the film be restored to the OTT platform.
