The state-level convention of the Akhil Jharkhand Mahila Sangh, the women’s wing of the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), concluded in Ranchi with a pledge to build a “strong, prosperous and self-reliant woman.” The convention, held at the Tana Bhagat Indoor Stadium in Khelgaon, drew thousands of women representatives from across Jharkhand and adopted several resolutions on women’s empowerment, political participation, economic independence and safety.
Addressing the gathering, former Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister and AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto said the party is committed to ensuring greater political and social participation of women by developing women leaders from the state level down to every booth. He claimed AJSU had taken a pioneering step by implementing 50 percent reservation for women in panchayat elections, while accusing the Hemant Soren-led government of pursuing anti-women policies.
Mahto alleged that the state government had used the Maiya Samman scheme for electoral gains but failed to include women who turned 18 over the past two years in the beneficiary list. He demanded that the government enrol all eligible women and release ₹60,000 to them, warning that women would launch protests if the demand was ignored.
He further said that the overall development of society, the state and the nation cannot be achieved without empowering women. Expressing concern over law and order, Mahto alleged that rising crime, corruption and the influence of middlemen have undermined women’s safety and dignity in Jharkhand.
Lok Sabha MP Chandraprakash Choudhary said the state government follows a “double standard” on women’s welfare. He highlighted AJSU’s efforts to strengthen women’s self-help groups and provide equal opportunities through local governance.
The convention concluded with the adoption of key resolutions focusing on women’s empowerment, economic self-reliance, political representation, women’s safety, employment generation, strengthening self-help groups, and expanding the organisation’s future programmes across Jharkhand.
