The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation on the issue of delimitation, alleging that the campaign against the constitutional exercise is driven by narrow political interests rather than public concern.
State BJP spokesperson Mrityunjay Sharma said delimitation is not a political decision but a constitutional and democratic process aimed at ensuring balanced representation in legislative bodies. He alleged that some political parties were attempting to mislead people by creating unnecessary fears even before the completion of the national Census.
Sharma said the Constitution envisages delimitation after every Census to align parliamentary and assembly constituencies with changes in population. He argued that varying population growth across different regions has led to significant disparities in the number of voters represented by elected members, making delimitation necessary to uphold the democratic principle of equal representation.
He noted that the delimitation exercise had already been deferred twice for 25 years each in the national interest. According to him, the constitutional process should now move forward to ensure that the value of every citizen’s vote becomes more equitable and democratic representation more balanced.
The BJP spokesperson further said it was premature for political parties and organisations to raise concerns when the Census process itself has not yet been completed and official population data is still unavailable. Drawing conclusions without verified figures, he said, was irresponsible and intended to create confusion for political gain.
Sharma maintained that delimitation is not directed against any state, region or community but is a constitutional mechanism designed to ensure fair and balanced democratic representation across the country. He said debates on the issue should be based on official Census data rather than speculation or political rhetoric.
Appealing to the public, the BJP urged people to remain cautious of what it described as misleading campaigns and to place their trust in constitutional institutions and democratic processes.
