Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is poised for one of its biggest capacity expansion projects with a proposed 15,000-crore brownfield investment under SAIL’s Vision 2030, aimed at strengthening steel production, modernising facilities and driving industrial growth in the region.
The expansion will raise crude steel production capacity from 4.65 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.25 MTPA, while hot metal production capacity will increase to 7.55 MTPA. The project will be implemented largely within the existing plant premises, making optimum use of available infrastructure.
The proposed facilities include a new 4,500-cubic-metre blast furnace, a modern steel melt shop, a Thin Slab Casting and Direct Rolling (TSCDR) unit, advanced raw material handling and energy recovery systems, and Industry 4.0-based digital technologies to enhance operational efficiency and produce value-added steel.
The project also lays emphasis on sustainability through lower carbon emissions, zero liquid discharge, energy-efficient processes and expansion of green cover.
BSL expects the expansion to generate employment, boost MSMEs, logistics and engineering sectors, encourage entrepreneurship and support India’s growing demand for steel in infrastructure, railways, defence, automobiles and manufacturing.
