BSL to get iron ore through India’s longest steel-sector slurry pipeline

Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is set to receive iron ore directly from SAIL mines through India’s longest slurry pipeline in the steel sector, marking a major milestone in securing a reliable and sustainable raw material supply for the plant’s future expansion.
The project will transport around 8.3 million tonnes of iron ore annually from SAIL’s Gua and Bolani mines to Bokaro via a 258-km main pipeline from Jamda. The system has been designed to handle up to 16 million tonnes per year in the future, aligning with BSL’s expansion plans.
The slurry pipeline will replace dependence on railway rakes by transporting iron ore in slurry form directly to the plant, ensuring faster, uninterrupted and more efficient raw material movement. The project also features a closed-loop water management system, with water used for transportation being returned to the mines for reuse.
Designed with an operational life of about 30 years and targeted for completion in three-and-a-half years, the project is expected to reduce transportation costs, ease pressure on the railway network, and significantly cut dust, diesel consumption and carbon emissions.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Bokaro Steel Plant’s long-term raw material security while supporting cleaner, greener and more sustainable steel production.
