On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Deoghar organized an awareness program at the IMA Hall auditorium in Deoghar. The event saw active participation from IMA Deoghar members, nursing students, and representatives from both print and electronic media.
During the program, all members were urged to ensure that their clinics, nursing homes, and hospitals remain completely tobacco-free zones. IMA Deoghar had first taken this initiative in 2024, which was later endorsed across Jharkhand by the State IMA.
In collaboration with AIIMS Deoghar, a display board has been prepared for tobacco prohibition, which will be installed in all medical institutions. Letters have also been sent to the Deputy Commissioner and Civil Surgeon of Deoghar, requesting them to declare all government offices and hospitals as tobacco-free zones and to strictly implement the provisions of COTPA 2003. This step is expected to provide a better environment for patients, their attendants, healthcare workers, and society as a whole, while also helping in the prevention of tobacco-related diseases.
National IMA Vice President Dr. Dhanwantari Tiwari informed that tobacco consumption in any form introduces numerous cancer-causing elements into the body, primarily leading to cancers of the mouth, throat, lungs, and esophagus. He emphasized that people who consume tobacco can quit the habit if they are aware of its harmful effects and possess strong willpower.
IMA Deoghar President Dr. N.C. Gandhi appealed to all doctors to educate patients and their relatives visiting their clinics about the dangers of tobacco use.
The event was attended by IMA Jharkhand Vice President Dr. R.N. Prasad, Joint Secretary Dr. Gopal Ji Sharan, former Vice Presidents of IMA Deoghar, the new executive committee members, and several other IMA members. The message conveyed through this program.
