First MBBS batch to pass out from Manipal Tata Medical College

May 31, 2026

Pioneer News Service, Jamshedpur

Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), Jamshedpur, is set to script a historic chapter in the field of medical education with its first graduation ceremony scheduled for June 1. The event will mark the graduation of the institution’s pioneer MBBS batch and underscore the success of India’s unique private–private partnership model in medical education.

The ceremony will be held at the MTMC campus in Baridih from 11:30 am onwards, where 133 students from the 2020-21 MBBS batch will receive their medical degrees and formally embark on their professional careers as doctors.

Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Irfan Ansari and Vijay Kumar, Senior Advisor in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, will also attend the event as distinguished guests. Senior leaders from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Tata Steel, members of the MTMC Governing Council, faculty members, healthcare professionals, parents and alumni are expected to be present.

Established in 2020 through a pioneering collaboration between MAHE and Tata Steel, MTMC is widely regarded as India’s first private–private partnership in medical education. The institution was founded with the vision of expanding access to quality medical education and strengthening healthcare services in underserved regions of Eastern India.

Over the past six years, MTMC has emerged as a prominent centre for medical, allied health sciences and postgraduate education. The institution currently serves more than 1,286 students across its various academic programmes and continues to play a key role in preparing healthcare professionals capable of meeting the nation’s growing healthcare demands.

Brig. (Dr.) H.C. Bandhu, Dean of MTMC, described the occasion as both a proud and emotional moment for the institution. He said the success of the first graduating batch reflected the strength of the academic ecosystem, the dedication of faculty members and the vision behind the MAHE-Tata Steel partnership. He expressed confidence that the graduates would uphold the values of competence, compassion and service throughout their careers.

Somnath Das, Group President – Special Projects, Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) and Officer on Special Duty to MAHE, said the graduation ceremony highlighted the impact of purposeful institutional collaboration. He noted that the partnership between MAHE and Tata Steel had successfully combined academic excellence with community development goals, creating an institution that addresses both educational aspirations and societal healthcare needs.

D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, said the vision behind MTMC extended beyond establishing a medical college. He stated that the institution was created to strengthen healthcare systems, expand opportunities and contribute to the long-term development of Jharkhand and Eastern India. The graduation of the first batch, he added, symbolises the emergence of a new generation of doctors committed to serving communities and improving lives.
