In a major step aimed at improving healthcare services, the Hemant Soren-led government in Jharkhand has initiated the process of replacing old, worn-out, and non-functional ambulances operating in government hospitals across the state.
The Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare has issued directives to review the condition of ambulances in all government hospitals. Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh on Tuesday issued an official letter instructing all Civil Surgeons and the Director-in-Chief of Health Services to undertake a comprehensive assessment.
According to the directive, ambulances that have completed more than eight years of service or have covered over 1.5 lakh kilometres will be declared unfit (“condemned”) as per norms. These vehicles will subsequently be auctioned.
The government has taken the exercise seriously and asked all Civil Surgeons to prepare a detailed report of ambulances in their respective districts, including vehicle registration numbers and other key details. The report must be submitted to the Director-in-Chief, Health Services within one week.
After receiving inputs from all districts, the Director-in-Chief will compile the data and prepare a consolidated proposal for submission to the Health Department. This will facilitate financial and administrative approval for the procurement of new ambulances for hospitals across the state.
Officials said the move is expected to significantly enhance emergency response and ensure timely medical care for patients in Jharkhand’s public health system.
