The State that always attracts controversies during Rajya Sabha elections is once again set to witness another interesting election for two seats to the Upper House of parliament on Thursday with the JMM, Congress and BJP locking horns before the polls in the State Capital.
What initially appeared to be a predictable election has transformed into a closely watched contest marked by strategic maneuvering, heightened political messaging and concerns over possible cross-voting.
The ruling INDIA bloc comes with a significant numerical advantage in the 81-member Assembly. The coalition commands 56 legislators, comfortably above the threshold required to win two seats. In contrast, the NDA’s strength stands at 24 MLAs, leaving it mathematically short of securing a berth on its own.
Despite this apparent advantage, political circles in Ranchi remain cautious about predicting the final outcome. The entry of Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, supported by the NDA, has altered the dynamics of the contest and injected a sense of uncertainty into what was once considered a routine electoral exercise.
Nathwani’s decision to enter the race gained particular attention after his meeting with Chief Minister Hemant Soren ahead of filing his nomination. The development triggered widespread speculation about possible political undercurrents and prompted renewed calculations within both camps. While the NDA projected confidence following his candidature, leaders within the ruling alliance began focusing on ensuring complete unity among coalition partners.
The contest has since evolved into a battle of perception as much as numbers. The BJP has gathered its legislators in Ranchi ahead of polling and is closely monitoring voting strategies, while Congress candidate Pranav Jha has engaged in extensive outreach to alliance partners in a bid to consolidate support.
The numerical equation appears straightforward at first glance. The INDIA bloc’s tally comprises 34 JMM MLAs, 16 Congress legislators, four from the RJD and two from CPI(ML), taking its total to 56. The NDA consists of 21 BJP MLAs along with one member each from AJSU, JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas).
However, the real challenge lies in vote distribution. JMM nominee Baijnath Ram is widely expected to secure election without difficulty. Attention is therefore centred on the second seat, where Congress nominee Pranav Jha faces a more delicate arithmetic. Political observers believe the JMM may seek to provide its own candidate a comfortable margin before allocating remaining votes elsewhere, potentially tightening the contest.
For Nathwani, the path to victory depends on attracting support beyond the NDA’s core strength. He requires additional votes through cross-voting, abstentions or backing from legislators outside the opposition alliance.
Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand in the past offer ample reason for caution. Several contests have produced unexpected outcomes due to strategic vote transfers, absenteeism and narrow margins. Some races have been decided by fractions of a vote, underscoring the importance of disciplined voting and effective election management.
As polling day approaches, both camps are projecting confidence. Yet the outcome will ultimately depend not just on declared numbers but on how effectively each side maintains unity and manages its votes. In a state known for producing dramatic Rajya Sabha contests, few are willing to rule out another surprise until the final ballots are counted.
