In a rare instance of swift police action, Pipra police in Palamu district arrested the accused in a murder case within hours of the registration of the FIR. Police officials said such a quick breakthrough in a murder case has rarely been witnessed in the district in recent decades.
The incident took place on Monday, July 27, when 50-year-old Prabhunath Rajwar, a Dalit resident of Madhubana locality under Pipra police station, was allegedly killed in broad daylight while he was playing cards under a banyan tree. According to police, the incident occurred around 1.30 pm, and Rajwar died while being taken to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), Daltonganj.
Eyewitnesses present at the spot reportedly saw the accused fleeing after the attack. The alleged weapon, a sharp-edged iron-made baluwa, was recovered from near the scene of the crime.
The deceased’s family named Ramesh Singh alias Mora Singh (55), a resident of the same Madhubana locality, as the sole accused in the murder case. An FIR was lodged on Tuesday, July 28, by Rajwar’s brother Shyam Lal Rajwar. The case was registered under murder provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Following instructions from Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary, a special team led by Chhatarpur SDPO Prashant Kumar launched a search operation to trace the accused. Police sources said Singh had escaped through forest routes but was eventually located and detained from Parwa area on Tuesday.
During interrogation, Singh allegedly confessed to the crime and claimed that he killed Rajwar due to a long-standing dispute. Police said the accused cited personal resentment and caste-based prejudice as reasons behind the attack.
Singh was produced before the court on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody.
