Pakur police have arrested a 28-year-old man accused of operating a fake document racket involving forged caste, residential and birth certificates. The accused, Hemant Kumar Saha, a resident of Bakshisha village under Hiranpur block, was sent to judicial custody on Monday after interrogation.
The arrest was made in connection with Pakur Muffasil Police Station Case No. 79/26, registered on June 21 under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police suspect Saha played a key role in preparing or facilitating fake documents in return for money.
According to investigators, the accused collected money from people by promising to arrange official documents and Aadhaar-related services. Several documents issued through the alleged racket were later found to be suspicious or forged, causing difficulties for beneficiaries seeking government services.
Police are also probing allegations that Saha may have duped hundreds of people over the years by charging fees for fake or improperly obtained documents. However, the exact number of victims and the amount involved are yet to be determined.
The investigation has been expanded to ascertain whether the accused was part of a larger network. Officials are examining seized documents, mobile phone records, digital devices and bank transactions to identify other suspects.
Muffasil police said further arrests are possible and added that the full scale of the alleged racket would emerge after a detailed investigation. The case has drawn considerable attention in Pakur district.
