A 48-year-old government doctor was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Irrigation Department’s Inspection Bungalow in Masanjore, Dumka district, on Saturday morning, prompting a police investigation into the incident.
The deceased was identified as Dr. Shashi Dinkar Minj, a medical officer posted at Hazaribagh Sadar Hospital. A resident of the Bariatu area in Ranchi, Dr. Minj had checked into the government guest house on Friday evening along with three friends.
According to police, the group, comprising Sunil Kumar Singh, Anil Kumar Singh and Neeraj Kumar, had booked Rooms No. 1 and 2 at the inspection bungalow. On Saturday morning, when the three men went to wake Dr. Minj, they found him lying unresponsive on his bed. After noticing that he was not responding and his body had turned cold, they immediately informed the Masanjore police.
A police team led by Masanjore Officer-in-Charge Awadhesh Kumar reached the spot and called a local doctor, who examined Dr. Minj and declared him dead. The body was later sent to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH), Dumka, for post-mortem after the family members were informed.
During preliminary questioning, Dr. Minj’s companions told investigators that the group had spent Friday evening together and had consumed alcohol before retiring to their respective rooms for the night.
Police officials said no visible external injury marks were found on the body during the initial examination. They added that the exact cause of death remains unknown and that the case is being investigated from all possible angles.
Officials said the actual cause of death would be ascertained only after the post-mortem report is received. Further legal action, if required, will be taken based on the medical findings.
Dr. Minj is survived by his wife, who is also a doctor and is posted in Jamshedpur, and their two daughters. His sudden death has shocked the medical fraternity and colleagues across the state.
