A research paper focusing on the human values of development and the impacts of displacement, based on the Jadugoda uranium mines and Jharia coalfields in Jharkhand was presented by Dr. Fr. Robert Pradeep Kujur, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi during an international symposium held at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University (UK).
Marking a significant achievement in the fields of education and research at the international level, Kujur presented his paper titled ‘Shaping the Future: Innovation, Technology & Business in a Changing World’ at the conference which was conducted from July 20 to July 22, 2026.
The research highlights critical social and human issues associated with displacement caused by mining and specifically focuses on the socio-economic impacts of mining and the resulting human cost borne by the people living in India’s mineral-rich regions of Jadugoda and Jharia. It also reveals that mining compels people to abandon their home and land which profoundly and negatively affects their lives, employment, income, health and social status.
The paper also provides a detailed study of the challenges and struggles faced by the communities in areas like Jadugoda and Jharia. The presentation sparked a meaningful and enlightening discussion among scholars, academicians and researchers from around the world who had gathered at Oxford to deliberate on contemporary issues regarding sustainable development and social responsibility.
The event was conducted by distinguished academicians Brian Mountford and F. King Alexander.
