Two decades on, State University teachers still await promotion

June 7, 2026

Kumar Prabhat

Dumka

Assistant Professors serving in state universities across Jharkhand have expressed growing concern over prolonged delays in service confirmation, career advancement, and promotions, despite having dedicated nearly two decades to teaching, research, and institutional development.

Faculty members claim that many teachers who joined universities around 19 years ago continue to face uncertainty regarding their service status and career progression. The issue has triggered frustration within the academic community, with educators alleging that long-pending service matters remain unresolved due to a lack of coordination among the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), university administrations, and the Directorate of Higher Education.

The affected teachers say they have played a crucial role in strengthening higher education in the state through classroom instruction, research activities, and implementation of key academic reforms, including provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP). However, they argue that the absence of timely decisions on promotions and regularization has adversely affected their morale and professional security.

Educationists note that the problem extends beyond individual grievances and has implications for the overall quality of higher education. They contend that universities depend heavily on the commitment and motivation of faculty members, and prolonged uncertainty regarding service conditions can negatively impact academic performance and institutional growth.

Observers have described the situation as a significant challenge for the higher education sector in Jharkhand, emphasizing that academic excellence cannot be achieved without addressing the legitimate concerns of teachers. Many faculty members feel that years of dedicated service have gone unrecognized, creating a sense of disillusionment within university campuses.

Teachers and academic stakeholders have urged the authorities to adopt transparent and time-bound measures to resolve pending cases related to confirmation of service, regularization, and promotions. They maintain that ensuring professional dignity, financial security, and career advancement for educators is essential for strengthening the state’s higher education system and safeguarding its future.
