A woman allegedly attempted suicide while in police custody at Pandra OP in Ranchi on Wednesday, triggering serious allegations against the police. She is undergoing treatment at City Hospital, where doctors said her condition remains critical and that her health can be assessed only after the next 24 hours.
According to police, the woman and her husband were brought to Pandra OP around 7 pm on Tuesday for questioning in connection with a theft reported at a neighbour’s house. The couple was interrogated overnight and kept in custody.
Police said the woman allegedly tried to hang herself with a dupatta on Wednesday morning. Officers intervened immediately and rushed her to City Hospital, where she is receiving treatment.
The woman’s family has levelled serious allegations against the police, claiming officers demanded Rs 1 lakh to settle the case. They also alleged that police refused to release the woman while indicating that her husband could be let off. The allegations have sparked anger among family members and relatives.
Police, however, maintained that stolen jewellery was recovered based on the woman’s disclosure and said the investigation is continuing. Officials have not commented on the family’s allegations of extortion.
The incident has raised questions over custodial procedures and the circumstances leading to the alleged suicide attempt. Police have deployed security at the hospital while the matter remains under investigation. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
