OBC groups protest absence of separate column in census Form

May 30, 2026

PNS

Ranchi

Concerns have emerged over the ongoing census process as the current format does not include a separate column for Other Backward Classes (OBC). While Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) have dedicated categories, OBCs are being listed under the general or “other” category.

Despite the Central Government’s earlier announcement of a caste-based census on April 30, 2025, following long-standing demands by organizations like the National OBC Front, the omission of a distinct OBC column has triggered resentment among the community.

At a meeting held at the National OBC Front’s state office in Harmu, Ranchi, members unanimously decided to oppose the current format and demand immediate inclusion of a separate OBC category.

The organization also announced plans to submit memorandums to political leaders, the Governor, and the Chief Minister. A protest, including a gherao of the State Backward Classes Commission office in Dhurwa, has been scheduled for June 4, 2026.

The meeting was chaired by State President Rajesh Kumar Gupta and attended by several office bearers and members.
