11 more Jharkhand products receive GI tag

June 17, 2026

PNS

Ranchi

Jharkhand has achieved a major milestone in preserving and promoting its traditional crafts, textiles, agricultural products and indigenous heritage, with 11 more products receiving Geographical Indication (GI) tags from the GI Registry.

The latest additions to the state’s GI portfolio include Kuchai Silk Sarees and Fabrics, Bhagaiya Sarees and Fabrics, Dumka Chadar, Badoni Putul (traditional puppets), Panchi Pargana Sarees and Fabrics, Jharkhand Tussar Silk Sarees and Fabrics, Dhokra Craft, Tribal Jewellery, Bamboo Crafts, Kesaria Kalakand, Benam and Jadupatua Paintings. The official notification for the newly approved GI tags is expected in the coming days.

The GI recognition is aimed at providing legal protection to traditional products, enhancing their market identity and helping them gain wider national and international recognition. With the latest approvals, the number of GI-tagged products from Jharkhand has increased from just one in 2019—Sohrai and Khovar paintings—to 12.

A significant contribution to this achievement has come from Jharcraft, which has been actively promoting GI registrations since 2019 under the Industries Department and the Chief Minister’s Board for Micro and Cottage Enterprise Development. Jharcraft successfully secured GI registration for three products—Jharkhand Tussar Silk Sarees and Fabrics, Tribal Jewellery and Bamboo Crafts.

Officials believe the GI tags will enhance the authenticity, visibility and market potential of products created by traditional artisans and indigenous communities across the state.

Several other unique Jharkhand products are also awaiting GI recognition. These include Mandar, Paitkar Paintings, Nimucha/Karni Shawls, Lac Bangles, Deoghar Peda, Ragi, Rugda, Dhuska, Kusumi Lac, Sal Seeds, Mahua Flowers and Karanj Seeds.
