Tourism emerged as a key driver of Jharkhand’s future growth and investment strategy on the second day of the two-day National Stakeholders’ Consultation 2026 at Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi, where policymakers, industry leaders, tourism experts and development partners deliberated on unlocking the state’s vast tourism and industrial potential.
The session, titled “Destination Jharkhand: Driving Tourism Investment and Inclusive Development,” focused on positioning Jharkhand as one of India’s leading tourism and investment destinations through policy reforms, infrastructure development, community participation and private sector investment.
During the consultation, participants highlighted that Jharkhand is rapidly emerging as a diversified and investment-ready tourism destination, with the sector playing an increasingly important role in driving economic growth, employment generation and sustainable development. Officials noted that the state recorded 5.85 crore tourist visits in 2024, including 4.4 crore pilgrim visits, underscoring its growing appeal as a major travel destination.
The meeting underlined that the government’s decision to grant Industry Status to the tourism sector has opened new avenues for private investment, institutional finance and infrastructure development. Alongside strengthening religious tourism, the state is expanding its focus on eco-tourism, wildlife tourism, adventure tourism, water sports, mining tourism and community-based tribal tourism to diversify its tourism offerings.
The consultation also highlighted the government’s efforts to create an investor-friendly ecosystem through progressive policy initiatives, including the proposed Tourism Policy 2026, Homestay Policy 2026, digital single-window registration and other reforms aimed at simplifying investment procedures. Tourism infrastructure is being strengthened under flagship Central Government schemes such as PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan, while new destinations, visitor facilities and tourism amenities are being developed across the state.
Officials informed stakeholders that the government has invited private investment in hotels, resorts, ropeways, skywalks, water sports facilities, floating restaurants, houseboats, camping sites and experiential tourism projects. These projects will be supported through an attractive package of incentives designed to encourage both domestic and institutional investors.
The consultation reiterated that by leveraging Jharkhand’s rich natural landscapes, spiritual heritage and vibrant tribal culture, along with modern tourism infrastructure and active community participation, the state aims to establish itself as Eastern India’s leading sustainable and investment-ready tourism destination.
Addressing the gathering, Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar said nature has blessed Jharkhand not only with abundant mineral resources but also with exceptional natural beauty, which he described as an even greater asset. While the state has long been recognised for its mineral wealth, he said the government now wants Jharkhand to earn equal recognition for its scenic landscapes and tourism potential.
“Jharkhand has opened its doors to tourism, and we warmly welcome visitors from across the country,” the minister said, inviting tourists to experience the state’s diverse attractions.
Highlighting the employment potential of community-based tourism, Kumar said homestays could generate far greater livelihood opportunities than conventional hospitality projects. “A five-star hotel may directly employ around 200 people, but if we develop 100 homestays, with each family comprising five members, nearly 500 people can be connected to sustainable livelihoods. Our upcoming Homestay Policy will be highly attractive and will help establish Jharkhand as one of the country’s leading homestay destinations,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of religious tourism, the minister said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the government is actively reaching out to people across the country to invite them to experience Jharkhand’s rich cultural, spiritual and natural heritage. He also assured investors and tourism stakeholders that the state government remains fully committed to creating a welcoming and investment-friendly environment.
“Jharkhand has a unique charm. Whoever visits the state or belongs to it carries a lifelong connection with its beauty, culture and warmth. We invite everyone to explore, experience and invest in Jharkhand as we build a sustainable and inclusive tourism ecosystem together,” Kumar said.
The session was attended by Ministers Deepika Pandey Singh, Sanjay Prasad, Irfan Ansari, and Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey, along with senior government officials, industry representatives and tourism stakeholders. The deliberations are expected to contribute to the state’s Vision 2026 and long-term strategy for promoting tourism-led economic development and attracting greater private investment.
