When we think of electric vehicles, we picture cars weaving through city traffic or scooters zipping past us at traffic lights. The conversation around EVs has revolved around passenger transport, charging stations and government incentives. Yet, one of the fastest-growing electric mobility markets in India is unfolding far away from public roads.
It is inside factories, warehouses, airports, mines, hospitals and large campuses. Every day, thousands of electric vehicles move people, raw materials, tools and finished products through these facilities. They rarely make the news, but they are quietly transforming industrial operations.
For entrepreneurs and manufacturers, this could become one of the most attractive opportunities in India’s EV ecosystem.
A Market Few Talk About
India has thousands of manufacturing plants, hundreds of industrial parks, more than 200 operational mines, rapidly expanding logistics parks, large airports and sprawling educational campuses. All of them depend on efficient internal transportation.
For decades, this work was carried out by diesel-powered equipment, LPG vehicles or manually operated carts. That is beginning to change. Electric alternatives have become practical, reliable and increasingly economical.
Unlike passenger vehicles, these machines operate within fixed premises. They travel predictable distances, return to the same location after every shift and can be charged overnight. Fleet managers look closely at operating costs, maintenance expenses and uptime. Electric vehicles score well on all three counts.
The Factory Floor Is Already Electric
Walk through a modern manufacturing facility and electric mobility is impossible to miss.
Battery-powered forklifts unload raw materials, tow tractors transport components to assembly lines and electric platform trucks carry finished products across the plant. Personnel carriers move workers quickly between production blocks in large factories.
Indian companies such as Godrej Material Handling, Voltas, Toyota Material Handling India and Jungheinrich India have expanded their range of electric material-handling equipment as manufacturers modernise their operations.
The shift has gathered pace because electric equipment is quieter, easier to maintain and better suited for enclosed working environments.
Warehouses Are Driving Demand
The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to an equally rapid expansion of warehouses across India.
Inside these facilities, electric pallet trucks, stackers, reach trucks and autonomous guided vehicles have become common. Distribution centres operated by companies such as Amazon India, Flipkart, Delhivery and DHL rely extensively on battery-powered equipment to keep goods moving around the clock.
Since these vehicles cover relatively short distances, they do not require very large batteries. Lower maintenance requirements and reduced downtime make them an attractive investment for warehouse operators.
A Cleaner Future for Mining
Mining is another sector where electric mobility is beginning to make a difference.
Underground mines depend on extensive ventilation systems to remove exhaust fumes generated by diesel equipment. Battery-electric loaders, drilling machines and utility vehicles reduce emissions inside the mine and lower ventilation costs while improving working conditions.
Global manufacturers including Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar have already introduced electric mining equipment. As India expands underground mining operations, these technologies are expected to find wider acceptance.
Airports Are Quietly Electrifying
Airports function like self-contained cities, with hundreds of specialised vehicles supporting daily operations.
Passenger buggies, baggage tractors, maintenance vehicles and cargo movers are increasingly powered by electricity. The Airports Authority of India has been encouraging the adoption of cleaner ground support equipment, while airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi have steadily expanded the use of electric vehicles as part of their sustainability initiatives.
Travellers usually notice the electric carts that help elderly passengers reach their boarding gates. Behind the scenes, many more electric vehicles are working throughout the airport.
Hospitals, Campuses and Industrial Townships
Large hospitals and university campuses also have a constant need for internal transportation.
Electric carts are used to move patients, medicines, laboratory samples, meals, housekeeping supplies and maintenance staff. Institutions such as AIIMS Delhi and Christian Medical College, Vellore have adopted electric mobility for several of these applications.
Corporate campuses, IT parks and industrial townships are following a similar path as they look for quieter and cleaner transport solutions.
An Opportunity for Indian Manufacturers
This segment has attracted several Indian companies that see an opportunity beyond passenger vehicles.
Altigreen has built electric cargo vehicles that are increasingly finding industrial applications. Gayam Motor Works (GMW) manufactures electric vehicles designed for campuses, factories and commercial establishments. Several startups are also developing autonomous warehouse robots and specialised utility vehicles for industrial use.
Many of these businesses compete through customisation and after-sales support rather than sheer production scale. That creates space for innovation and gives Indian manufacturers an opportunity to build products for niche markets.
Why Businesses Are Switching
The economics are becoming difficult to ignore.
Electric industrial vehicles consume less energy, require fewer moving parts, spend less time in maintenance and deliver lower operating costs over their lifetime. Since they work within fixed premises, charging infrastructure is relatively easy to install and manage.
The decision to adopt electric mobility is increasingly being driven by productivity and cost savings. Sustainability is an added benefit rather than the primary reason for investment.
Looking Beyond the Highway
India’s EV story is still being written, and many of its most promising chapters lie away from public roads.
As factories become smarter, warehouses grow larger and industrial automation gathers pace, demand for specialised electric mobility solutions will continue to rise. The companies that design these vehicles may never become household names, yet they could build significant businesses by serving industries that depend on efficient movement every single day.
Passenger cars will continue to dominate the headlines. The bigger opportunity for Indian entrepreneurs may well be in the vehicles that spend their entire lives inside the country’s workplaces.
