Jharkhand moves to set up Film & Television Institute
Short-term courses to begin soon from Suchna Bhawan

Jharkhand has taken a significant step towards establishing its own Film and Television Institute, with the state government initiating groundwork to launch the Jharkhand Film and Television Institute (JFTI) from Suchna Bhawan in Ranchi. The institute is expected to provide professional training in filmmaking and media, creating new opportunities for aspiring filmmakers and creative professionals in the state.
The initiative follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on July 22 in the presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren between the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata.
As part of the process, SRFTI Vice-Chancellor Samiran Dutta, accompanied by a delegation, visited Suchna Bhawan on Thursday and held discussions with officials of the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD). The team also inspected the available infrastructure to assess its suitability for launching academic programmes.
Joint Director of the IPRD, Anand, said the institute will initially offer short-duration courses tailored to the needs of students and working professionals. The programmes, ranging from one to six months, will be available in part-time, full-time and evening formats. He said the department aims to launch these courses at the earliest by utilising existing infrastructure with technical support from SRFTI.
Speaking on the occasion, Dutta said the institute would provide world-class technical training in key areas of filmmaking, including sound design, editing, animation, script and screenplay writing, cinematography, direction and film production. He assured SRFTI’s full support in preparing the institute’s academic blueprint, classroom design, faculty development and other technical requirements.
He also suggested that once the institute becomes fully operational, it should introduce specialised short-term training programmes for media professionals to help them upgrade their skills in modern film, television and digital media technologies. Dutta further recommended beginning with a film appreciation course to promote a vibrant film culture in the state.
Officials said the establishment of JFTI is expected to strengthen Jharkhand’s growing film ecosystem, nurture local talent and equip aspiring media professionals with industry-oriented skills, while creating a dedicated platform for the state’s creative industries.
