Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is conducting a special campaign focused on the conservation, cleanliness, and pollution control of Kanke Dam, one of the capital’s crucial water sources. Following a recent on-site inspection of the Kanke Dam area in Ward No. 01 by the Municipal Commissioner, various wings of the corporation are taking coordinated and necessary action in light of the directions issued.
In this regard, a joint team from the Sanitation Wing and the Transport Wing is conducting a special cleanliness drive to remove water hyacinth, silt, and other unwanted materials accumulated in Kanke Dam. Under this campaign, a Poclain machine and a weed harvesting machine have been deployed into the dam. Through these state-of-the-art machines, work is underway to clear the water hyacinths spread across the reservoir and desilt the bottom. This will not only improve the cleanliness of the reservoir but also preserve and strengthen its water-holding capacity.
Additionally, extensive clearing of bushes and wild grass growing along the coastal/coastal-adjacent areas of the dam is being carried out. This will improve the overall cleanliness of the area while promoting its beautification.
The Engineering Wing is also executing necessary works, keeping in mind the conservation of Kanke Dam and civic amenities. The silt extracted by the Poclain machine is being utilized to construct temporary pathways in the catchment area. This initiative will ensure end-to-end accessibility for citizens visiting the dam area.
Furthermore, major sources of pollution in the dam are being identified, and measures are being taken to address them. As an immediate solution, the Engineering Wing is working to divert drain water toward nearby existing but currently non-functional temporary ponds. The objective of this arrangement is to stop the direct flow of drain water into Kanke Dam and control the pollution levels in the reservoir. Work is also underway on necessary plans for permanent and long-term solutions in the future.
Ranchi Municipal Corporation aims to develop Kanke Dam into a clean, conserved, and pollution-free reservoir so that this vital water source can be secured for future generations. Continuous monitoring and necessary actions are being taken by the corporation regarding the conservation of water bodies.
Ranchi Municipal Corporation appeals to all esteemed citizens not to discharge any form of solid waste, plastic, construction debris, or liquid waste into reservoirs, drains, and water sources. Additionally, citizens are urged to avoid encroachment in the reservoir area and actively participate in this crucial environmental and water conservation campaign. Only with the cooperation of citizens can Kanke Dam, along with other water sources in the city, be kept clean, safe, and vibrant.
