The long-awaited upgrade to healthcare infrastructure in the Santhal Pargana region is set to become a reality as Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH) prepares to begin operations from its newly constructed campus at Dighi. The shifting process from the existing Sadar Hospital premises has entered its final phase, with outpatient department (OPD) services expected to commence in the last week of July.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore along the Dumka Ring Road, the 500-bed tertiary care hospital has been designed as a modern, self-sustaining healthcare facility catering to the medical needs of the entire Santhal Pargana division.
Hospital authorities said the transition to the new campus will be carried out in phases to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services. The relocation will begin with OPD operations, followed by the gradual shifting of indoor wards and specialized clinical departments.
The sprawling campus also includes comprehensive residential and administrative infrastructure, including hostels for interns, nurses and resident doctors, the medical superintendent’s residence, the dean’s bungalow, an auditorium and a guest house.
The hospital building has been planned to provide specialized services across multiple floors. The ground floor will accommodate the ophthalmology and orthopedics departments, separate 20-bed emergency wards for male and female patients, a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), major and minor operation theatres, and an advanced radiology wing equipped with MRI, CT scan and ultrasound facilities.
The first floor will house the departments of obstetrics and gynecology, tuberculosis and chest diseases, psychiatry and dermatology, along with an IVF centre and dedicated isolation wards.
On the second floor, the hospital will have a 60-bed pediatric ward, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the dental department. The third and fourth floors have been earmarked for general medicine wards, the central laboratory and administrative offices, while the fifth floor will provide expanded orthopedic services and additional advanced clinical care facilities.
PJMCH Superintendent Dr. Ruben Hembrom said preparations for the transition are being closely monitored and that the hospital is prioritising the launch of OPD services by the end of July. He said the phased commencement of services would ensure a smooth migration of all remaining departments without disrupting patient care.
The commissioning of the new medical college hospital is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery across the Santhal Pargana division. For years, patients from Dumka, Sahibganj and Pakur have had to travel to Ranchi, Dhanbad and Kolkata for advanced treatment and specialised diagnostic services.
