Tata Motors has signed a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Welspun Renewable Energy to power its manufacturing facilities, including its flagship Jamshedpur plant, with electricity generated from a wind-solar hybrid project.
The agreement, signed in Mumbai, provides for the development of an 86 MW hybrid power plant that will supply renewable energy to Tata Motors’ manufacturing facilities in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka. The initiative marks a major step in the company’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and accelerate its transition to green manufacturing.
The project is expected to generate nearly 200 million units of clean electricity annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.4 lakh tonnes every year. Besides ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply, the initiative is expected to contribute to environmental conservation and improve sustainability in industrial centres such as Jamshedpur.
The agreement is part of Tata Motors’ long-term sustainability roadmap, under which the company aims to run all its manufacturing facilities entirely on renewable energy by 2030.
Vishal Badshah, Vice President (Operations), Tata Motors, said the company is committed to making its factories environmentally sustainable. He said the new project would provide safe, secure and clean power to its major manufacturing plants while advancing its broader sustainability goals.
Welspun Renewable Energy Managing Director and CEO Kapil Maheshwari said the collaboration represents a practical model for helping large industries transition to cleaner and more sustainable operations.
Industry experts described the partnership as a significant milestone for India’s manufacturing sector, highlighting that industrial growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. They noted that increased use of renewable energy in industrial hubs such as Jamshedpur would help reduce emissions, improve air quality and support sustainable regional development.
The initiative reinforces Tata Motors’ commitment to clean energy and environmentally responsible manufacturing.
