Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), one of India’s leading integrated steel plants under the Maharatna public sector enterprise SAIL, is set to embark on a major brownfield expansion under SAIL’s Vision 2030, paving the way for higher production, advanced technology and regional economic growth.
For over five decades, BSL has been a key contributor to India’s industrial development, producing high-quality steel for infrastructure, railways, energy, automobiles and defence, including warships of the Indian Navy.
The proposed project will increase crude steel production capacity from 4.65 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.25 MTPA, while hot metal capacity will rise to 7.55 MTPA. The expansion involves an estimated capital investment of ₹15,000 crore.
Developed using the plant’s existing land and infrastructure, the brownfield project will minimise additional land requirements. Major facilities include a new 4,500-cubic-metre blast furnace, a modern steel melt shop, Thin Slab Casting and Direct Rolling (TSCDR) unit, advanced raw material handling systems, energy recovery facilities, and Industry 4.0-based digital automation technologies. These will enhance the production of high-quality flat steel, high-strength steel and automobile-grade steel.
Sustainability is a key focus, with provisions for lower carbon emissions, zero liquid discharge, energy-efficient technologies and the development of a green belt.
The expansion is expected to create significant opportunities in construction, engineering, logistics, MSMEs, equipment supply and allied sectors, while boosting local business, entrepreneurship and skill development.
With rising steel demand across infrastructure, railways, defence, energy and manufacturing, the project is expected to strengthen national initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
BSL has appealed to citizens, public representatives, industry and social organisations to support the project, describing the expansion as a milestone that will generate employment, accelerate technological advancement and lay the foundation for the long-term development of Bokaro and the region.
