Police on Wednesday conducted a raid at the residence of former NDA candidate from the 2024 Pakur Assembly election, Ajhar Islam, in Janakinagar village to arrest him in connection with an alleged assault on police personnel during a land dispute investigation. However, despite an extensive search, he was not found at his residence.
According to police, the incident stems from a land dispute in which a prohibitory order had been imposed by the Civil SDO’s court on a plot owned by Zakir Sheikh. Despite the court order, construction work allegedly continued at the site. When a police team visited the location on Tuesday to inquire into the matter, Ajhar Islam and his associates allegedly obstructed the officers, engaged in a verbal altercation and pushed police personnel while they were performing official duties.
Pakur SDPO Kumar Gaurav said an FIR was registered on the complaint of Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramdular Singh of Muffasil Police Station. The case has been lodged under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Ajhar Islam, his father Ali Akbar, private security personnel and others.
Civil SDO Simon Marandi confirmed that the police had sought the deployment of an executive magistrate for the arrest operation after the FIR was registered. The raid was carried out in the presence of the Circle Inspector (Sadar) acting as magistrate, with teams from Muffasil Police Station, Pakur Town Police Station and Malpahari Outpost participating in the operation.
Police said the case has been registered as Muffasil Police Station Case No. 96/2026. The accused have been charged with obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, violating prohibitory orders and assaulting police personnel.
During the operation, officials from the Labour Department also visited the site. According to officials, several child labourers were rescued during the inspection, and a separate inquiry has been initiated by the department.
Reacting to the development, AJSU Party’s acting district president Alok Joy Paul clarified that Ajhar Islam does not currently hold any organisational post in the party. He said Islam had contested the 2024 Assembly election from Pakur as the NDA candidate.
