At least four Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel, including a havildar, had a narrow escape after a large portion of the ceiling of the GRP mess collapsed at Daltonganj railway station under the Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway late on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 pm while the personnel were having dinner inside the mess. According to sources, Havildar Munni Lal and three other GRP personnel were present when a substantial section of the reinforced cement concrete (RCC) ceiling suddenly gave way. Fortunately, all four escaped unhurt.
Sources said the roof had been in a deteriorated condition for a long time due to persistent water seepage and waterlogging. The structure had reportedly shown signs of weakening over the years before the lower concrete portion of the RCC roof finally collapsed.
GRP in-charge at Daltonganj, Dilip Tiwary, confirmed that the roof had become dilapidated because of prolonged waterlogging. He said the falling debris completely destroyed the food that had been prepared for the personnel.
