Palamu gets 4.83 lakhs of polio vaccine doses: Civil surgeon

Palamu district has more than 4.83 lakhs of doses of polio vaccine having two drops per child for an estimated target vaccine for 3.97 lakhs of children in the age group of 0 to 5 years, said the civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Sriwastwa.
He said Palamu has received more than 24,000 vials of the vaccine @ of 20 doses each vial.
There is a 10 percent waste of the vaccines and hence it’s 18 doses, not 20 doses per vial, reminded the civil surgeon.
He said administering polio vaccine drops in transit of children like at bus stands, railway stations, auto rickshaw stands, village haats etc are more vulnerable to loss of vaccines.
Fourty nine village haats have been identified for 3 day polio vaccine drive, added the civil surgeon.
There is no resistance to the polio vaccine now. Parents are overwhelmingly accepting polio vaccination of their children, said a contented civil surgeon.
On being asked as to why such a concerted campaign for the polio vaccination now to which he said “It’s to bolster the herd immunity. Neighbouring countries Afghanistan and Pakistan are still fighting for the elimination of polio. Migration of the virus is a possibility. Hence this campaign for strengthening the herd immunity of polio.”
On Sunday schools and anganwadi kendras totalling around 5,000 will be doing polio vaccination.
Vaccine teams will be doing house to house vaccination of the eligible children on two successive days June 29 and 30.
