Thousands join Muharram processions in Ranchi amid tight security

June 27, 2026

Surendra Soren

Ranchi

Thousands of devotees took part in Muharram processions across Ranchi on Saturday, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The processions, marked by solemn mourning, religious devotion and displays of traditional martial arts, passed through the city’s Main Road and several other localities under elaborate security arrangements.

Devotees carrying elaborately decorated Tazias marched through the streets chanting “Ya Hasan, Ya Hussain” as they paid tribute to Imam Hussain and his companions, who are revered for their sacrifice in the fight against injustice and tyranny. Youth groups performed traditional akhara displays and martial arts demonstrations, adding to the religious observances while highlighting a long-standing cultural tradition associated with Muharram in the region.

The processions drew large crowds of mourners and spectators, with the atmosphere reflecting deep grief as well as communal harmony. People from different communities were seen cooperating to facilitate the smooth conduct of the event, while volunteers assisted in managing the movement of devotees along the designated routes.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds special significance for Shia Muslims as a period of remembrance and mourning. Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala after he refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad ruler Yazid. The event is regarded as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and the struggle for justice.

The Ranchi district administration and police made extensive security arrangements to ensure the peaceful conduct of the observance. A large number of security personnel were deployed along the procession routes, while additional forces were stationed at sensitive locations, including Albert Ekka Chowk. Senior police and administrative officials remained on the ground, continuously monitoring the situation.

Ranchi City SP said the police remained on high alert throughout the day and were also closely monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation or inflammatory content. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to circulate fake or provocative messages capable of disturbing communal harmony.

Police appealed to citizens not to believe or share unverified information and urged the public to cooperate with authorities in maintaining peace, law and order during the Muharram observances.
