Ranchi boy builds Aero Models & Drones

With access to limited infrastructure but armed with immense curiosity and determination, young innovators are now turning their ideas into reality and coming up with innovations like flying aero models and drones. One such name is Ranchi’s Santosh Ram Sahu.

In a small workshop, located in Tupudana on the outskirts of Ranchi, Sahu and his friends have been working on designing and building flying aircraft models while also exploring advanced drone technology.

With limited resources, Sahu and his friends have self- taught themselves the principles of aeromodelling and are now developing models that can successfully take flight.

“Since childhood I have loved playing with aeroplanes and what once fascinated me, gradually turned into my passion. Initially the smaller aircrafts I had made did not fly but I kept at it. With continuous learning and experiments, I made changes, added electronic components, until one day the models actually started flying,” said Santosh.

The aircraft models created by Sahu and his team are the result of years of self-learning, experimentation and persistence. When seen in the sky, these aero-models can easily be mistaken for a real aircraft.

Mantu Kumar, a team member, recalls how Sahu has always been passionate about flying,” I have known Santosh since childhood. He would often speak about innovating drones to show people what was possible. When he asked me to join him, I am glad I did. It is both exciting and encouraging to work towards a common goal.”

Santosh and his team also display their models at science exhibitions and public events and the group is also working on advanced drone technology. Their workshop, though small, has several aircraft models, tools and other components, is charged up with the energy of these go- getters to turn their dream into a reality.

“I remember even as a teenager, he would always keep himself busy and would often come to me with small projects which he had made with whatever he found easily or was available. Then one day he came to and said, ‘Maa see I have built this.’ Seeing his innovation fly made me feel on top of the world,” said a beaming Surekha Devi, Santosh’s mother.

Sahu lost his father at a young age and has been raised by his mother and elder brother who have always encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
